I have other been curious more or less this question. It is not approaching they taste the poison after answer before they die. I would guess they would have a righteous amount just to know how to taste it, I would feel Civilisation has lost masses great scientists to taste-testing poisons!
how did they know it was a poison if they didn't aroma it??

they read the "dieing notes of their fellow colleauges" who tested for the sake of tast.
