This is outwardly characterized by R.E.M. (rapid eye movement) in which our mind is queue certain memories to elicit and create and new mind event. It is during this time that the body will release a chemical that paralyzes the body for its' own sanctuary. You have to lower than stand that we can not differentiate between vivid dreaming and being fully awake. So if the body did not shut down the central muscle groups during REM sleep our body would be reacting to the dream and who know what might happen consequently. Have you seen some of the dreams inhabitants have currently. Now that I think roughly it maybe it is to protect us from them while they sleep.
