How do doctors put someone contained by a "medical induced coma"?

With Medication.
Definition
A barbiturate-induced coma, or barb coma, is a temporary state of loss of consciousness brought on by a controlled dose of a barbiturate drug, usually pentobarbital or thiopental.
Purpose
Barbiturate comas are used to protect the brain during major brain surgery, such as the removal of arteriovenous malformations or aneurysms. Coma may also be induced to control intracranial hypertension cause by brain injury.
Various chemicals (drugs) which completely disable conscious thought and all other signs of natural life other than those which inform you to breath, blink, and digest **. Not that you do blink in a coma.
My husband have to be put in a "drug induced coma" surrounded by June. They used a sedative medication and later a drug that paralizes the muscles. The reason they did this to him be that he had to be resuscitated after an acute heart attack and they reduced his body temperture to 89 degree for 24 hrs to protect his brain function. This also required him to be on a ventilator as well. He recovered from his acute episode although he is doing pretty powerfully he continues to have issues near his heart.
